A uniquely yellow-colored residential building in the background assisted us verify the footage.

Our team is analyzing images and video circulated this morning that depict the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures originated relied on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.

Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
