Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Inclusion in England's Ashes Team

England have opted for a 12-man selection just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise spot.

Bashir's inclusion indicates that the tourists will wait until the day of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.

Both pace bowlers are part of the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.

The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse most likely to be omitted if the spinner makes the starting XI.

Ground Conditions Lean Toward Pace Bowlers

The England coach had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged several previous Tests.

In those games, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.

On a ground renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers is still the more likely choice.

Spin Options Weighed

Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the lower order.

However McCullum has opted to stick with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.

In July, Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”

“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” he said of slow bowling in matches Down Under.

“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents come out and excel out here.”
