LA Experiences Historic High Temperatures Just Days Following Major Winter Storm.
Following a week of torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, the City of Angels is now seeing unusually warm conditions for this time of year.
Record-Setting Readings
By Friday afternoon, the temperature climbed to 91°F (33°C) in downtown Los Angeles, as reported by weather officials. This exceeds the prior high for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was established just last year.
"Very warm conditions" were labeled on official charts for the region.
Safety Advisories
Forecasters stated that Friday's weather posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their guidance included:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave children or pets unattended in a car.
A Sharp Shift
This sudden spike in mercury follows closely after a powerful storm system that battered the region earlier in the week. That system delivered heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to mountainous regions, causing flash flood warnings for millions residents.
Unfortunately, the severe weather also resulted in a large avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
Forecasters predict cooler conditions will arrive. The heat were predicted to fall to around 61°F (16°C) in downtown LA by overnight.
Other locales that hit ninety degrees included Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Meanwhile, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were projected to see the high 80s.
In the coming days, downtown Los Angeles can see temperatures in the 80s, with mid-70s temperatures expected for the start of March.
