Italy Secures Historic Three-Peat Davis Cup Title

Team Italy celebration

Flavio Cobolli won the sixth-longest deciding set in team tennis history to beat his Belgian opponent on Friday

The young Italian star alongside Matteo Berrettini led Italy to team tennis success as the home team overcame Spain to secure a historic three-peat title in front of an ecstatic home crowd

Two days after he edged a marathon lengthy decider, the Italian talent once again shone as he recovered from a set and a break down to beat Jaume Munar in three sets

The young player's determined 1-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 success secured a 2-0 victory for his country in Bologna after his teammate had triumphed 6-3 6-4 against Pablo Carreno Busta

It is a fourth overall team championship victory overall for Italy, who are the initial country to achieve three straight championships since defending champions stopped receiving direct entry to the championship match over five decades back

Home Crowd Fuels Team Italy Triumph

Supported enthusiastically by the vast majority of a packed capacity crowd, the Italian star overcame a slow start to trigger moments of jubilation among the Italian players, coaches and fans

Cobolli was mobbed by his teammates on court but paused for a moment to commend Munar on his performance before rejoining the celebrations

Key Players Step Up in Absence

Each Italy and the Spanish team made the championship match despite being without star athletes, with the non-participation of top-ranked players denying fans a seventh matchup of 2025 between the top-ranked men's players

But, with national second-ranked another key player too missing, the Italian duo seized their moments in the spotlight with perfect records from three singles matches each during the tournament

Dramatic Recovery Seals Win

The crowd shouted Cobolli's name as he maintained his calm to serve out his recovery triumph to love, having forced the decisive break in the 11th game of a tense deciding set

That was no mean feat, given he had admitted he had achieved a "dream" in delivering Italy to the showpiece on home soil

In opposition to the scenes of the previous match, when Cobolli tore off his shirt in jubilation on "one of the best" days of his career, the ranked player paid the price for a slow start as he conceded a dominant opening set

But the determined player initiated a necessary, swift comeback after going a break down at the start of the following set

Cobolli's luck seemed to change after a nine-minute pause in the match when a spectator of the audience became ill

When play continued, and with Munar facing a critical moment, the player floated over a shot that hit a lucky net tape and brought the set back on level terms

Although frustratingly prevented multiple opportunities on his opponent's service game, the champion seized command of a decisive tie-break to force the final set - where he yet again delivered

Berrettini Continues Impressive Run

Berrettini had earlier extended his team competition singles victory run to 11 matches with an excellent display against Carreno Busta

The former Wimbledon runner-up used his third break point for a 5-3 lead before confidently closing the opener to zero

Having taken the majority of points to secure the opening set, the player appeared ready to tighten his hold on the match upon creating two break points in the initial game of the following set

His opponent managed to save both before producing a sequence of strong serving performances - but the Italian took his following chance and closed to zero to complete his triumph
