During 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed I would book accommodation upon arrival, but upon reaching the city, a big convention was in town and all the youth hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.

Coming from Singapore, I thought the possibility of spend the night at the terminal – only to discover Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate all night. With no idea what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on public transport and found myself drifting towards a gaming venue, believing I could pass the night in a place operating 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape for acing an interview the next morning, however, being a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

Our society requires more individuals like that woman.

Apparently, I appeared confused as a female student saw me loitering in the city and wondered if I was OK. I recounted my situation and immediately she said I could crash on the floor in her student dorm at ANU – which was perfect, given that my my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. She even offered me some free dinner: one of the stuffed baguettes she had taken home her part-time job. I had access to a hot shower and a secure location and safe for the evening.

Looking back, I can appreciate the significant risk she undertook as a young woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. Back then I existed within a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she did that – and remain deeply appreciative.

I never did go to the Australian National University, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of human compassion. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her generosity tenfold. Our society requires more folks with such compassion.
